*Farm Tour Description

The farm tour leaves from the hotel at 8:30 on Sunday, November 12th. From there we will travel to Washington’s Mt. Vernon, the historic home of America’s first president, George Washington. While there you can tour the mansion, see the historic area, outbuildings, gardens, tomb, farm, trails, exhibits in the Education Center, and The Shops at Mount Vernon. Lunch is on your own with a restaurant or a food court pavilion to choose from. We will be traveling to Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture around one in the afternoon and will head back to the hotel around 2:30.

Since 2010, the Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food & Agriculture has been dedicated to cultivating vibrant local food systems that prioritize health, equity, and sustainability, from the farm forward. Arcadia accomplishes this through community gardens, launching a community farm, managing Mobile Markets that serve DC’s low-access neighborhoods, and cooperating a community farm stand in Southeaster Fairfax County. Arcadia’s Veteran Farmer Program trained more than 185 veterans, active-duty personnel, and immediate family members in the business and craft of sustainable farming since its start in 2015. More than 70 graduates are now operating their own farms.

All this takes place on land that once belonged to George Washington, in partnership with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and Woodlawn-Pope Leighey.
